A Lifelong Commitment to Play, Learning, and Community
Heidi Boyum has spent most of her life in the Mankato area. Her childhood was filled with imaginative play in her neighborhood—she fondly remembers crafting a makeshift sailboat and hauling it down the sidewalk, embarking on grand imaginary voyages. Whether playing banker or creating make-believe homes, these experiences nurtured her deep belief in the power of play.
Now a dedicated mother to her 11-year-old son, Mitchell, Heidi has watched him grow up with the Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota (CMSM). With the encouragement of his grandmother, Mitchell was introduced to the Museum’s enriching experiences in art, music, and hands-on learning. Unlike Heidi’s childhood, where outdoor play and neighborhood adventures were a daily norm, Mitchell found his sense of community and discovery within the Museum’s walls. His love for the Archimedes screw in the Dotson Back 40 and the Eldon Marks Workshop made CMSM a cherished part of his early years.
Heidi’s connection to CMSM runs deep. One of her earliest links to the Museum was through Lou, her synchronized swimming coach from 1981-1985. This long-standing relationship, coupled with her experiences as a parent, inspired her to give back. Recognizing the importance of access to play and experiential learning, Heidi became an advocate for the Museum’s mission.
Heidi’s philosophy on philanthropy and the Museum is simple: it takes a village to raise a child.
“This community is a village for all children and families, supporting their well-being,” she says. She encourages other donors and business owners to invest in enriching experiences for children, especially in today’s digital world. “In an era where screens dominate so much of our lives, spaces like CMSM—where kids can engage in electronic-free, hands-on play—are more important than ever.”
To Heidi, CMSM is more than a Museum; it is a place of connection—for family and new and old friends. Whether building new relationships or strengthening old ones, the Museum provides a space for families to create lasting memories and a stronger community. With her continued support, Heidi remains committed to ensuring CMSM flourishes for generations to come.
