Join us on Saturday, August 1st from 9 am to 12 pm for one of our favorite free family events of the year: Fire Safety Education Day at the Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota! This is our fifth year hosting this event, and it just keeps growing. Enjoy a free and fun-filled day for the whole family while discovering the importance of fire safety. If you’re looking for things to do with your kids in Mankato this August, this is one you won’t want to miss. During this event, children will learn what to do in the event of a fire, become familiar with emergency equipment and gear, and learn fire safety practices.
Here’s everything you need to know…
EMERGENCY VEHICLES TOUR
Emergency vehicles will be on display and ready for exploration for curious children and their grown-ups! Trust us, the looks on children’s faces when they get to sit inside a firetruck are absolutely priceless. They will also learn why each fire department has different colored emergency vehicles, too!

In addition to our local and surrounding area fire departments joining us, the sheriff, DNR and ambulance teams will also be on-site to provide valuable fire safety information for children and families. Sparky the Fire Safety Dog is will also be on site to meet with children during this event.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY
Fire Safety Education Day promises an awe-inspiring environment filled with exploration, discovery, and a whole lot of fun. A few favorites to look forward to include:
- Firetrucks and other emergency vehicles to explore.
- Fun giveaways, activities, and crafts.
- Firefighter relay race for kids.
- Presentations both inside and outside the Museum.
- Photo opportunities with Smoky the Bear.
- FREE Museum admission all day!

In addition, there will be car seat safety demos, where experts can teach adults how to properly install and use car seats to keep little ones safe on the road.
A fire extinguisher simulator will be available to provide insight on how to handle emergencies confidently and effectively in a safe, controlled environment. Perfect for older kids, this interactive demonstration teaches essential fire safety skills while providing hands-on practice.
Fire Safety Day wouldn’t be complete without a grease fire demo! See firsthand how grease fires ignite and how to stay safe. You’ll also see drone demonstrations overhead as you discover how technology helps in emergency response.
Explore equipment used in water rescues such as rescue boats which are also an important part of keeping people safe. Don’t miss this essential, hands-on event for all parents and caregivers!
WHY WE LOVE THIS EVENT
The importance of fire safety education will remain with these children forever. This is a hands-on way to have fun while also learning valuable life skills. This experience also provides an opportunity for children to see first hand what it’s like to be a firefighter!

It is a perfect opportunity for kids to learn about fire prevention while having a blast.
